Jasmine Smith

Hi everyone, I’m Jasmine Smith. I am 24 years old and from Leicestershire. I work in the mortgage industry to fund my passion for ponies and in particular, competing the ponies. I currently own two Connemara ponies, Daffodil Queen and Omey Patrick. Both ponies were bought from Darren Walsh, a local Connemara expert. We compete mainly in working hunter and showing classes but enjoy show jumping and dressage also.

To give you abit or background on the two ponies, I’ll tell you a little about them both. Daffodil Queen or Daffy to her friends, was an impulse buy in Feb 2015 by my mum, Mandy, who first introduced me to my love for horses. Daffy is an extremely hot and sensitive ride and has very exuberant moves all of her own. Often they involve going sideways or upwards! However, in the years I’ve owned Daffy she has won many working hunter championships and she is what the judges describe as “a proper hunting pony”. Sadly in April 2017, Daffy tore her SDFT (superficial digital flexor tendon) in her hock and has been on field rest for the duration of 2017. We have slowly brought her back in to work and she is now schooling well but it is doubtful she will jump again. Therefore Daffy and I hope to have success in the Connemara ridden classes towards the end of 2018 and onwards.

Omey Patrick, Granite to his friends, was bought not long after Daffy was sidelined with her injury. He’s a 6 year old 15hh Connemara by Glencarrig Patrick. Despite being too big to do the conny flat classes with, i believe he will do well not only in the working hunters but also in the show hunters. He is still very green but has all the potential, brains and looks to do very well and I am very excited for his future.

Although the horses are a way of life for my Mum and I, I do feel it’s necessary to enjoy other aspects of life as well and not put all of your eggs in one basket, so to speak. I’ve learnt that by not putting to much pressure on yourself and just enjoying the sport (the good and the bad) brings you much more success. In my downtime, or not downtime, however you want to look at it – I enjoy going to balls and party’s with friends, travelling the world as much as I can and generally living life to the full.
